About Steve Moreland

Steve lived his entire life as a cowboy and rancher in the Sandhills of Nebraska.  He loved living in Cherry County with the family he so cherished, where he worked to raise good cattle, be a good neighbor and a friend to all.  He began writing his book called “Fair Weather Cowboy” in his twenties, but life and responsibility brought its progress to a halt.  In the late 1990’s, Steve joined an online ranchers forum, where he enjoyed telling his ongoing experiences and stories from his past.  Later in life he wrote weekly columns for several local newspapers, and shared them and other experiences on Facebook.  This is a compilation of those stories, written to varied audiences.

A note from Steve's family

We just wanted to say a heartfelt Thank You - not necessarily for ordering a book, but for caring about Dad's life and stories.  Writing and sharing these recollections and anecdotes meant a great deal to him, and combined with photography, friends and family, his preoccupation with crafting them was one of the major joys of his later life.  Anyone who knew him will remember that from his youth, Dad was avidly interested in the 'Old-Timers' - their history and stories - and he disdained fiction and anything that wasn't 'Cowboy'.  In the last months of his life, he started to pull together the things he'd already written in order to collate the beginning of some kind of publication.  Sadly, he never got to finish his project.

Over this last year, we've been trying to help Mom finish what Dad started - not only to have for our own sakes and for our children, but to honor his memory and make his stories available to those of his friends and community who've always been interested in them - exchanged with him in the sale barn, the gas station, in the cafeteria at a high school game, at a parade, in a ranchers forum... wherever he could strike up a conversation.  We're grateful to share this little bit of his legacy.

Thank you.
